International Event on Computational Information Technologies for Environmental Sciences CITES-2023

(June 13 - 23, 2021, Moscow, Russia)

G.I. Marchuk Institute of Numerical Mathematics RAS, Research Computing Center of Moscow State University, Institute of Monitoring of Climatic and Ecological Systems SB RAS, Moscow Center of Fundamental and Applied Mathematics, Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics RAS, Earth Science Department and Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Science are organizing the International Event on Computational Information Technologies for Environmental Sciences CITES-2023 (June 13 - 23, 2021, Moscow, Russia) , including a conference (June 13-16) and a young scientists school (June 19-23). The event is supported by the Russian Science Foundation, project 21-71-30023.

The main topics of the event are: development of numerical models of the atmosphere, ocean, land surface, sea ice, climate modeling and numerical weather prediction, tools and results of climate data analysis. Invited lectures by leading experts will be given on these most important topics, providing young scientists with relevant information to focus their professional attention on the most needed and promising research problems.

Sessions of the CITES-2023 conference will focus on fundamental aspects of Earth system modeling and computational and information technology applications in the geophysical sciences.  Particular attention will be paid to the economy and society adaptation to expected climate changes and providing managers with the information they need to make administrative decisions.

Session 8. Future Earth Program and Northern Eurasia Future Initiative. Chair Dr. Pavel Groisman, North Carolina State University, USA (email: pasha.groisman@noaa.gov)

The Program Committee will invite key specialists in the research area to present invited lectures, describing the state of the art in the targeted areas (45 min), and invited papers, describing recent important inputs into the research domain (30 min). Also a limited number of papers will be selected for oral presentation (15 min). Contributed papers will be presented mainly as short oral presentations, whose content should be described in detail by relevant posters. Those who would like to present an invited/oral paper, please, contact Prof. E.P. Gordov (gordov@scert.ru).

We invite papers on the development of Earth system model components, in particular models of atmospheric, oceanic, and near-surface processes (including the development of dynamic blocks), representation of uncertainties in input data and models, and information and data systems for Earth sciences.  We are also looking forward to papers on regional interdisciplinary applications covered by the Future of the Earth Program and the Northern Eurasia Futures Initiative.

School and Conference Format

The school will be held in person, and some lectures will be presented to the audience online.

The conference is planned in a mixed format: speeches in the hall and in the online format.

The working languages of the CITES conference are Russian and English. The possibility of simultaneous translation into English will be worked out by the Organizing Committee.

The CITES-2023 events will be held in Moscow: the conference in one of the halls of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the school in the Institute of Numerical Mathematics RAS.

Publications

The abstracts selected for presentation will be published in the Collection of conference abstracts in electronic resource format and presented on the website of the event. The issue of indexation of the Collection in the RSCI will be worked out by the Organizing Committee.

The Program Committee reached an agreement on the following publication opportunities based on the results of the reports at the conference:

1.         According to the results of presentations of short oral reports by young scientists, several of them will be recommended for publication in the format of short communications in the journal "Meteorology and Hydrology".

2.         Several reports will be recommended for publication as full-length articles in the journal "Hydrometeorological Research and Forecasts" of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia.

3.         A number of papers will be recommended for publication as full-length articles in the journal “Computational Methods and Programming”.

he Program Committee only recommends papers for publication. Final selections are made by the Editorial Boards based on reviewer feedback.

Presentations of lectures and papers will be published on the conference website
